An Hispanic-American Saga
A suspenseful novel filled with unbridled passions, jealousy, incest, murder, witchcraft and dark superstitions. Roots of Indifference is interwoven with the story of a prestigious family during the early 1900s, struggling with racial intolerance as they try to carve a place for themselves in a hostile land during the Mexican Revolution, World War I, and The Great Depression. This fascinating novel brings to light the horrendous injustices inflicted upon the Mexican-Americans, who suffered cruel indignities and discrimination. It is a story that needs to be told about the turbulent times during those dark years of indifference.
Terri Ragsdale, author of Roots of Indifference and  the children's book, A Legend of Grand Mesa was a Spanish interpreter for federal, state and local agencies. She is now retired from working with the State of Colorado for over 30 years and resides on the Western Slope with her immediate family.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING:

Rich in History
by Valley Native

I live in the region where this story took place. The details and the history is very accurate. It reminded me a lot of the stories that my father, my grandmother told us about Pancho Villa and the injustices done to the Mexican American people. I recommend this to anyone not familiar with the plight of the mexican people on both sides of the border. I can't wait for the second book to come out.Roots of Indifference

Great Historical Novel!
By Joan Baker "Joan"

As a native Texan and avid history reader, I was captivated by this book on many levels. Ms. Ragsdale has taken her knowledge of the Mexican-American struggles and the early life in the Rio Grand Valley and woven them into a facinating and believable story. Her vivid imagination puts you right in the middle of the action and you can't wait to see what happens next!

AUTHOR'S NOTE

My book is an historical, fictional novel set in the period frin 1910-to 1941. The research in this saga took 20 years to complete. It entailed getting the historical information from stories told by the older generations in vivid details about their experiences. After living in the Rio Grande Valley, I learned that the atrocities that took place were being kept a secret and never discussed in school or the educational system. By doing intense research, I opened up a new world of information on articles never before told or written. This gave me the opportunity to write in a novel form about the lives of a forgotten people. It's a book that totally describes the struggles and patience of the Mexican-American people living in a ruthless time and era that was lawless. It was after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and opportunists moved in, with greed, buying the land for pennies and running the region with a gun and a whip. The complete transformation became disheartening and the majority became indifferent, separating two nationalities in their own heritage and culture. Read about the injustices in a time when it was so common. The history of the Rio Grande River affected the citizens living on both sides of the border and the culture of an upcoming generation of Hispanics and their rich heritage. It's a suspenseful novel, with supernatural incidents predicted and caused  by the healers, called cuarandera, and those practicing witchcraft. Unexplained murders and mysteries set in the thickets of the mesquites and the forbidden love of the two headstrong lovers. This is a story that will take you into the depths of Mexico and part of its history including the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
